Plumbers and pipefitters fabricate, assemble, install, maintain and repair piping systems that transport all types of fluids, slurries, and gas in the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.

Members of Local 157 also install related equipment, backflow prevention, medical gas installations, welding, plumbing, instrumentation, gas distribution, HVAC and refrigeration.

Members have been on the job in central Indiana/Illinois at the Danville (IL) REG Bio-Diesel Plant, Cayuga Powerhouse, the Merom Powerhouse, International Paper, Cayuga, the Marathon Refinery, Robinson (IL),

Dynegy Newton Power Station, Newton (IL), Duke Energy Edwardsport (IN), and Eli Lilly at Clinton (IN). Plumbers have also been on the job at Indiana State University campus and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Volunteer /community service activities supported by the Local include Habitat for Humanity, United Way of the Wabash Valley, Wabash Valley Community Foundation, Indiana Blood Center, Relay for Life, United Cerebral Palsy Telethon, and the Labor Day Parade.

Local 157 was established in 1896 and has 1,780 members in 16 counties including (in Indiana) Benton, Carroll, Clay, Clinton, Fountain, Greene, Montgomery, Parke, Sullivan, Tippecanoe, Vermillion, Vigo, Warren, White and parts of Knox and Putnam, and (in Illinois) Crawford, Vermilion, Douglas, Clark, Edgar and Richland.

Apprentice Program

The five-year plumber and steamfitter apprentice program includes 246 classroom hours and 1,700 on the job hours annually.

Skills learned include welding, plumbing, rigging, fabrication, blueprint reading, drafting, brazing, soldering, technical writing, speech communication, labor history, advanced mathematics, instrumentation, medical gas, and back-flow prevention.

About 35-50 apprentices are accepted each year; applications are taken from May 1 through January 31 at www.indianacareerconnect.com. Other educational opportunities include an Associate’s Degree in Applied Science.

The Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 157 Training Department currently operates an 18-week accelerated welding program with direct entry into the apprenticeship program.

Outreach activities include career fairs at community colleges and high schools and an apprenticeship showcase at the Indiana Statehouse.

Journeyman training or certifications available include OSHA 10, OSHA 30, welding, industrial rigging, AutoCAD, CFC certification, plumbing code, back-flow testing and prevention, medical gas, instrumentation and valve repair.
